Have you Met... Steven?
Project Manager, Steven Carr is originally from a film, TV and music production background working for companies such as the BBC. He joined Universal Live as a trainee technician in 2008, since then he has worked his way up through the ranks to AV Technician and now as project manager. His past experience working within the broadcasting industry means that vision is easily his favourite part of any technical production. He’s actually quite the expert!
Q1. What is the most random request that you have had from a client?
“It’s difficult to use the word random when working in live events, as nothing really surprises these days. But I think one of the more memorable requests was having to work with Cirque Bijou and having to work with their rigging team (there were a lot of acrobats and silk work!) Also, the lighting and stage had to fit their performance style whilst also being practical for the rest of the show. It was really exciting to see it all in action on the day.”
Q2. What is your favourite food?
“Thai is probably my favourite at the moment”
Q3. What is your career-defining moment?
“Hopefully it hasn’t been defined too early! But successfully managing one of the breakout areas which had 1,000 delegates moving through it and attending six different presentations, at any one time, was pretty great to do. Any awards shows I find massively exciting as well as they have so many different elements going on at the same time, so when they successfully run without any hiccups it feels good!”
Q4. Tell us your biggest bugbear/ pet hate
“People arriving late”
Q5. Why did you choose a career in the live events industry as a technical project manager?
“I have a background in film and television, but I had heard there was a job going at my local Cardiff branch through a video production company I was working with at the time. It intrigued me enough to apply and I am still here now!”
Q6. Do you have any pets?
“Three cats. Flash, Buffy and Ethel. All rescue cats who had those names already! Yes I am a crazy cat person…I embrace it.”

So that is Steven. Stay tuned for our next edition of Have You Met…
